Secrets of coloured ribbons...
who knew?
Ribbons in the Victorian times tucked into little love notes meant something
I love this, It is well known about the language of flowers but not so much about ribbons.
"If with me you will write send me back a bow of white"
So a gentleman would send a little love note and the lady would respond with a coloured ribbon, probably the gentleman would include the ribbon in the note. If the lady did not feel that way she would send back a different colour or ignore it.
It really fascinates me that there was a code within a piece of ribbon depending on the colour. I will
never look at a bit of ribbon now in the same way again. Many a vintage book I have found a strand of ribbon tucked into it and never really thought much about it .. until now! Could it have been a secret between young lovers or just a bit of pretty ribbon to mark a page .... who knows.
I don't know about you but I thought red was the colour of love .. it appears not so if it was a piece of ribbon! It seems blue was the colour of love way back when...
Well I hope you have a great weekend and I will see you back here on Monday. In the meantime Happy Stitching!
Wow! that is interesting. I always thought red was the colour of love.
